This is a sudden problem, not one that was intermittent. The lens will only focus in one direction. If the camera is set on an object close in and then pointed to an object further away, it will auto focus and take a photo. The 55-250mm AF-S has an A/M focus switch, which has to be set to A. If you've done this, and the lens still isn't working, Nikon can answer your questions better than we can. What I tried so far: Focus Mode set to AF-A, I can make blurry photos when set to M. Rangefinder is ON. Detach and reattach lenses. Cleaned lens. Charge battery fully. I do not have button on lens MA, its only set in menu. AE-L/AF-L button is not pressed - when pressed I can make blurry photos again.

When you activate live view, the camera uses contrast detection. Contrast detection is available only in the live view mode because it needs the camera's sensor. For more details about how these technologies work more, see this Fstoppers article: The Difference Between a DSLR's Viewfinder Autofocus and Live View Autofocus

Another thing is the communication between the lens and the camera body. Remove the lens, look at the contacts on both the camera and the lens. The all should be shiny. Clean with alcohol and QTip if necessary. See page 14 of your manual for attaching instructions.

I just bought a Nikon D3300 from a guy from eBay. (Actually not eBay, but a Dutch website, same concept). It came with 3 lenses: an 18-55mm kit lens, a Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3, and a 50mm f/1.8 lens, all containing autofocus motors. As soon as I reach past 50mm in the zoom range, the camera stops autofocusing completely.

I've also never taken off this lens for the 6 years I've had the camera. Recently, I got a Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S lens. After I took off the original 18-55mm lens to attach this new 50mm, the Autofocus stopped working. I checked all of the focusing switches (both the one on the body and the lens) and all are in the correct positions (AF and M/A).

In case the lens is a cheap kit lens like the AF-S DX 18-55, it is likely not worth the trouble to repair, since such a lens can be bought new for about 100 bucks - or you might take the opportunity to upgrade to a better quality lens. If autofocus does not work even with a different lens, there's no easy fix - the problem is almost certainly

Take the lens off of your camera. Put the lens in MF mode. Twist the FOCUS ring (the tip of the lens) all the way to one side (extend it). You may hear a click noise or two, this is good, but don't FORCE the lens. Twist the FOCUS ring all the way to the opposite side (retract it). Again, you may hear a couple of clicking noises.

The lens should of course auto-focus on a D3100 since this lens has a built it motor, while the D3100 does not have a motor built in the body. Try to put another lens (with built in motor) on the D3100 to ensure that it's not the body that is malfunctioning. If other auto-focus lenses work, then you should change the 35mm 1.8 for a new one. .
