The modern BMW starter motor is a permanent magnet direct current electric motor with a solenoid mounted on it. When current from the vehicle battery is applied to the solenoid, the solenoid engages a lever that pushes out the drive pinion on the starter driveshaft and meshes the pinion with the starter ring gear on the flywheel of the engine.

X5 E53 3.0D 2005: struggling to find fuel pump relay. Hi! my 2005 X5 3.0D (E53) cranks but doesn't start up. When it does I can hear a noise from the pump (I suppose), most of the times it doesn't. I suspect it's the fuel pump relay. I completely disassembled the glovebox and cannot find anything behind the fuse box (despite many forum posts EDIT: the pic you post has a part nbr (61358364175) that when pulled up says that it is a starter INTERLOCK relay for the e36/e34/e31. 11090 posts · Joined 2009. #8 · Jun 26, 2017. I would remove the IVM & inspect all of the fuses and connectors. There is also a fuse in the trunk #50, the relay is in glove box. Fuse #2 on the IVM should be the starter interlock relay.
